Newborn Abandoned On Frigid Sask. Doorstep

A bundled-up newborn baby girl was found on the doorstep of a Saskatoon home Saturday morning in brutally frigid temperatures.

Saskatoon police were called to investigate after the child - just a few hours old - was discovered by the homeowner, a nurse.

Lee Anderson and her husband found the infant wrapped in a towel and sleeping bag after they checked on their dog, who wouldn’t stop barking.

Baby Jane Doe was born only two or three hours before she was found, Saskatoon police said.

At 10 a.m., the temperature reached -29 C, dropping to -39 C with the windchill, according to Environment Canada.

Lee Anderson said she knew immediately the child was a newborn, the umbilical cord was still attached to the red and wrinkled baby.

“I wasn’t the least bit worried about cleaning her up. I took her into the bedroom, grabbed a bath towel and tried to keep her warm,” Anderson said.

“Her little hands were like ice.”

Anderson called police and the child was taken to hospital where officials determined she is a healthy full-term Caucasian baby.

“She looked just like a little doll,” Anderson said. “My husband said if we we’re 20 years younger we would have kept her,” Anderson said.

Saskatoon Police are asking for the public’s help in locating the baby’s mother.

“We want to make sure the birth-mother is OK and assist her in any way we can,” said Sgt. Jean Marc Voisard.

“With some sober second thought, maybe the baby’s mother will want to get help for herself and the baby.”

What the heck is happening in this world that someone leaves such a blessing on a front doorstep? This country offers assistance to anyone who needs it. Good assistance. Single mothers sometimes make more that working mothers.

There is no excuse for this to happen.
