Doctors Perform Unique Procedure On Preemie

Keeping a micropreemie alive is often a challenging journey filled with trial and error. Neonatologists know this well. But at Driscoll Children’s Hospital, a unique and creative medical procedure has defied all odds and saved the life of a preemie from Brownsville.

Pedro Hinojosa, Jr. was initially given just a few days to live. Born four months premature and weighing a little over a pound, he suffered from renal failure. However, thanks to a procedure called peritoneal dialysis, Pedro is now well on his way to recovery, two months later.

The procedure involved inserting a tube into Pedro’s abdomen, through which a dialysis solution helped filter his blood. After three consecutive days of dialysis, Pedro started producing urine, a positive sign of progress.

Now, this little warrior is thriving. Despite still being on a feeding tube, his doctors assure his parents, Pedro and Michelle, that he is going to be just fine.

This is a miracle for the Hinojosa family, who brought their baby to Driscoll Children’s Hospital in search of the closest facility capable of providing the life-saving treatment. To them, watching their baby struggle for life inside a plastic box was an unimaginable hardship. The fact that Pedro has made it through is a testament to the dedication and expertise of the doctors at Driscoll Children’s Hospital.

While not all preemies make it, it is heartwarming to witness the resilience and success stories of those who do. The Hinojosa family expresses deep gratitude to God for this miracle, and their joy and appreciation are shared by all who hear their remarkable story.
