Vietnamese Orphan Recovers After Life Changing Surgery

Ten-year-old Hoang Son Pham suffers from a vascular anomaly in which tightly packed clusters of blood vessels multiply at an unusually high rate producing a growth called a hemangioma.

Yesterday, he underwent two hour surgery in Boston to begin to remove the massive growth from his face.

Doctors say that he is recovering well from the procedure, even though they had to perform a tracheostomy to insert a semi-permanent tube that will keep air flowing to his lungs should subsequent treatments cause excessive swelling in his throat.

The little fighter will have to stay in hospital for the next six or seven days so he can heal from the operation.

The next phase of treatment, to be performed by a team of specialists, is designed to reduce that blood mass, the sheer volume of which adds to the risk of complications. An agent will be injected directly into the veins of the growth that will cause the blood to clot and harden which should ultimately lead to the collapse of the blood vessels.

Doctors say he’ll have to return to Boston periodically for the next year for treatments aimed at shrinking the football-sized mass that continues to grow over the left side of his face. Between rounds of injections, Son will stay in Halifax with Olwyn Walter, the president of the foundation that is arranging for his surgery.

The foundations site says that

the initial estimate for Son’s treatment was $700,000 but thanks to the Boston doctors who generously donated their services and to Ray Tye Medical Aid Foundation who contributed $150,000 to hospital costs, that estimate is now down to $200,000. The Children’s Bridge Foundation wants to pay this cost and the estimated $75,000 more for his on-going care, travel and living expenses during treatment.

Two Bermuda Moms Delivering Prematurely Flown Overseas

An increase in the number of premature babies being born in Bermuda forced 2 expectant mothers to be flow overseas to deliver.

One woman had to be air ambulanced to the U.S. while a second was whisked off to a hospital in Canada when it became evident her baby would be arriving weeks ahead of schedule, the Bermuda Sun has been told.

Both cases occurred in November, a hospital spokesman said yesterday, and are believed to have take place within days of each other. Mother and baby in both cases are doing well - the hospitals where they were flown were determined by their insurance company, which pays for the cost of air ambulance and overseas hospital stay.

At that time, the small island only had enough beds to accommodate 10 preemies. That number has since grown to 12, which is usually enough.

I can’t believe that there were no hospitals closer than Canada…What an inconvenience for a mom who is already in the discomfort of labour.

Marine Watches First Child Being Born On Webcam

A Kentucky woman was faced with the realization that her husband was not going to be here to experience the birth of their first child after he was deployed.

Even though Cpl. Andrew Powell, a U.S. Marine, wasn’t able to make it home Wednesday for the big day, he was still able to talk his wife through her labor, thanks to modern technology.

Ephraim McDowell Regional Medical Center provided the expectant mom with a web cam, a laptop, and an Internet connection.

This allowed Andrew to be there on the monitor the whole time, on the monitor, to talk her through her first delivery.

“I’m just so happy.. I didn’t think it would really happen,” Kristin Powell said after about seven hours of labor.

“I can’t find the words to describe it,” Andrew Powell said.

A few months ago Kristin had asked the hospital if they could provide the webcam service. Hospital officials had rarely heard of broadcasting a birth online, and didn’t know much about it. But after a little research, they made it happen.

Bailey Mae Powell was born 7.5 ounces, and practically right before her father’s eyes.

I guess it just goes to show that you never know until you ask. I bet that you will hear more of this happening now that it was such a success!
