Halle Names Baby Nahla

US Magazine is reporting that Halle Berry and beau Gabriel Aubry have named their newborn daughter Nahla Ariela Aubry.

Pamela Redmond Satran, the co-author of The Baby Name Bible and Cool Names for Babies explains origin of the name and the Disney connection:

“Nahla is one of those names that is occasionally found among people of African or Arabic descent, but isn’t commonly used in any particular culture.”

“Nala was the name of Simba’s lioness mate in Disney’s The Lion King, so it kind of has an African flavor as opposed to a genuine African pedigree, and Ariela’s “Disney antecedent,” she says, is Ariel in The Little Mermaid.”

Nahla Ariela Aubry arrived at 10:17am on Sunday morning weighing 7lb 4 oz’s.

Bed Shortage Sends Triplets To 3 Hospitals

When Amee German gave birth to triplets, she probably had no idea that she would have to travel 140-miles round trip to visit them.

A lack of beds is the reason why the newborns had to be placed in three different hospitals.

When the triplets were born at 32 weeks, there was only one bed available in the special care unit at the Rosie Maternity Unit in Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.

A spokesman for Addenbrooke’s said: “It is disappointing to have to split babies up but we must balance the clinical needs of all babies who may need our specialist care.

“After birth the parents were updated regularly and, with their agreement, two of the babies were moved to neo-natal network hospitals.

“We are very sympathetic to the family and appreciate the anxiety that this situation has caused them.

“We are delighted that the triplets are doing well and we hope that they will be soon be re-united in one hospital.”

Last year, the identical quads born to Alberta parents in Great Falls Montana were separated by the border when two babies were sent to Canada leaving mom and the remaining two babies in the US. Related Articles:

RECALL: MEGA Brands Magtastik and Magnetix Jr. Pre-School Magnetic Toys; Ingested Magnets Pose Aspiration and Intestinal Hazards

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission(CPSC), in cooperation with MEGA Brands America Inc., today announced a voluntary recall of about 1.1 million Magtastik and Magnetix Jr. Pre-school Magnetic Toys because magnets in the small flexible parts of the animals, vehicles and building sets can detach. Magnets found by young children can be swallowed or aspirated. If more than one magnet is swallowed, the magnets can attract each other and cause intestinal perforations or blockages, which can be fatal.

MEGA Brands and CPSC have received 19 reports of magnets coming loose, including one report of a 3-year-old boy receiving medical treatment to remove a magnet from his nasal cavity and one report of an 18-month-old boy with a magnet in his mouth, which was not swallowed.

Parents are being asked to stop using the recalled toys immediately and return them to MEGA Brands for a free replacement toy.

For additional information, contact MEGA Brands at (800) 779-7122 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. ET Monday through Friday, or visit the firm’s Web site at www.megabrands.com

Norwegian Hospital To Equip Babies with Anti-Theft Alarms

A Norwegian hospital plans to equip all newborn babies with anti-theft alarms to protect them from kidnappings and help avoid identity mix-ups.

“The main reason is that we want to emphasise security,” Erik Normann, head of the Akershus University Hospital near Oslo told AFP.

“There was a period in which Norway experienced several infant kidnappings and that is something we want to avoid,” he said.

The alarm system consists of two small chips, one attached to a bracelet clasped around the baby’s ankle as soon as it is born and the other stuck on the mother’s bracelet.

When the two chips are separated by a certain distance the alarm is set off. If a woman tries to leave with a baby who is not her own, or if someone tries to rip the bracelet off an infant, the hospital doors automatically lock shut and the hospital elevators grind to a halt.

A maternity unit in Shropshire has found a way to monitor their babies 24-hours a day by introducing an electronic tagging system for newborns. This technology seems to be gaining popularity.

I wish that North American hospitals would consider trying this as well.
