Fourteen Preemies Given Blood Thinner Overdose at Texas Hospital

Fox News is reporting that the NICU at Christus Spohn Hospital South, Texas gave fourteen premature babies overdoses of the pediatric version of the blood thinner Heparin.

The error in the dosage of the medicine, used to flush intravenous lines to prevent blood clots from forming, was discovered Sunday night by hospital nurses who noticed abnormalities in lab tests, said Spohn CEO Bruce Holstein. They discontinued its use immediately and gave newborns who needed it different medications.

Two babies have been released since the discovery was made and the others were being monitored carefully. Holstein told the Corpus Christi Caller-Times that the babies’ reactions to the overdoses varied, and he did not know details about effects.

Pharmacy operations were halted temporarily Monday. He said the error was believed to have happened in the pharmacy when the medicine was mixed.

Last fall this same situation happened at the Los Angeles Hospital Dennis and Kimberly Quaid’s twins were being looked after.

Although the babies have both recovered, the couple filed a lawsuit against the pharmaceutical company that makes the drug citing that medication errors occurred due to product labeling. Their suit also claimed that each year there’s 1.5 million medication errors in America.

24 Weeker Born In Toilet Is Thriving After Low Odds Of Survival

If is not traumatic enough to be born at 24 weeks, little Latiya arrived 16 weeks early while her mom was going to the bathroom.

On arrival, Latiya’s mom thought the little fighter, who weighed just a pound, was not alive.

Reliving the dramatic moment Marie, 38, said: “Latiya wasn’t breathing and her body was blue. “My brother called 999 and the call taker Graeme Maylor gave instructions to him.

“Graeme reassured him that the ambulance was on its way and within minutes a rapid response vehicle arrived.”

Steve Clarke was the first paramedic on the scene.

He resuscitated Latiya, who was no bigger than the palm of his hand, before paramedics John Mitchell and Danielle Bond rushed her to Liverpool Women’s hospital.

Just moments after arriving at the hospital paramedics ran the baby up to the NICU and put the baby in incubator, hoping it could help save her life.

The one pounder remained in the incubator for 10 days before being transferred to Alder Hey hospital for an operation on her bowel.

She then remained in an incubator for another three-and-a-half months and then probably to a crib when she was old enough to control her own temperature. Latiya has been diagnosed as being deaf in one ear, but that is currently the only problems she is believed to have.

This could change when she starts to walk and talk but the fact that she is able to breathe independently and doesn’t need assistance being fed is definitely a good start! Seconds after my son was born, he was wrapped in plastic and rushed into a room where there was a team of 7 people waiting to work on him

The fact that this baby did not benefit from having a Neonatalogist look after her moments after birth AND she still survived is amazing!

Matthew McConaughey and Camila Alves Welcome Baby Boy

UPDATE: Ok Magazine is reporting that the baby’s name is Levi Alves McConaughey.

Explaining how they came up with the name for their baby boy, Matthew tells OK!, “Levi was another name for the apostle Matthew in The Bible. They were, in fact, two names for the same person. “Our son was born at 6:22 pm, and this particular time represents my favorite verse in the book of Matthew in The Bible: ‘If thy eye be single, thy whole body will be full of light.’”

Baby Levi’s middle name is taken directly from his mother Camila’s last name. “We wanted to incorporate her family name,” explains the proud new father.

Inglesina’s Fast Hook-on Table Seat

Reviewed by Cari

I have found the answer to my restaurant dilemma! My eight-month-old daughter has passed the stage where I can bring the car seat into the restaurant. However, she is still too small for the highchairs that many restaurants have to offer. I usually end up stuffing her in with blankets to try to prevent her from slumping over or sliding through the openings and she ends up being too far below the table to be able to grab the food or toys in front of her.

My new solution? The Inglesina Fast Hook-On Table Seat. Ingenious, I tell you.

It’s completely portable so it’s perfect for taking to restaurants, friends’ houses and on extended holidays. The seat hooks on to just about any table and safely brings your little one (up to 30lbs) to the right height for accessing finger foods or toys. The chair padding is removable and comes in a variety of colours. So far, I haven’t had to wash mine because the padding and three-point harness straps are easy to simply wipe clean.

Attaching the seat is easy… just twist the handles clockwise to loosen and counter-clockwise to tighten to the table. Then, adjust the three-point harness to give your child a snug, secure fit. When you’re done, just unscrew the handles and fold in the sides. There is even an attached carry-bag for added convenience and portability.

This is a great product for anyone wanting to take a little one out for dinner (or anywhere else that may not provide the comforts of a baby-friendly home). And at a price point of about $40, it’s a great investment for the family on the go.

AACP Asks NBC to “Pull” The Baby Borrowers Due To Health and Safety Concerns

NBC’s new summer show The Baby Borrowers has been receiving some less than impressive reviews from critics in all industries. But it has been hit the hardest by groups that specialize in keeping children safe.

The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry issued a statement last Wednesday calling for NBC to “pull” The Baby Borrowers due to health and safety concerns it has with the reality show, which separates babies and toddlers from their parents and places them with teenagers for three days.

Seeing Baby Smile Gives Mom A Natural High

I am sure that every parent out there remembers the first time they saw their baby smile. My son smiled for the first time on Christmas morning 2005 and I remember it very well because I must have taken 50 pictures of the event.

Scientists at the Baylor College of Medicine say that seeing your own child smile actually activates the pleasure receptors in the brain typically associated with food, sex — and drug addiction.

“It may be that seeing your own baby’s face is like a ‘natural high,’ said Lane Strathearn, an assistant professor of pediatrics at Baylor and and Texas Children’s Hospital who studied the brain reactions of 28-first time moms.

Strathearn and his team used functional magnetic resonance imaging to scan the mothers’ brain reactions to photographs of their own 5-month to 10-month-old babies and those of others in three emotional states: happy, neutral and sad.

As expected, the sight of their own happy babies sent blood rushing to the moms’ brain regions associated with dopamine, a neurotransmitter that plays an important role in addiction. The spike rewarded the mothers with a neural kick that prompted them to want to take action to care for their babies, Strathearn said.

Surprisingly, however, the moms in the study didn’t respond as strongly to their own infants when their expressions were neutral — or when they were in distress. The neural scans showed the mothers responded to all crying infants about the same, by activating areas of the brain involved in conflict.

“We were expecting a different reaction with sad faces,” Strathearn said. Although it’s not exactly clear, that could mean that mothers are wired to react to all crying babies, not just their own.

Usher Shows Off Son In Essence Magazine

R&B artist Usher shows off his son Usher Raymond V for the first time on the August issue of Essence Magazine.

On being a father he says,

“He’s gonna admire me, he’s gonna look up to me. He’s gonna say, ‘I wanna be’ or he should say - ‘I wanna be like my father.”

When asked about his marriage to Tameka, Usher responds,

“They think that it was forced. I’ve heard a lot of comments like, “Oh, she trapped him.” “He got a baby by her, and then she’s married and she’s set for life.”

“No. She wasn’t pregnant when I asked her to marry me. There’s some sort of huge conspiracy over this, the fact that I made these choices in my life. No I grew older. As a man, I have to take responsibility and take a hold of my life. I’m accountable for what happens to my life now.”
