Rare Sextuplets Born In Iraq, Four Survive

An Iraqi mom welcomed what is believed to be the first set of sextuplets in the country’s history.

Sadly, two of the babies didn’t survive because the hospital lacked the proper equipment to keep them alive, her doctor said.

“Two of the children died because of problems breathing,” said Dr Ali al-Jabiri, in charge of premature infants at Al-Habboubi Hospital in the southern Iraqi city of Nassiriya.

“If we had suitable medical equipment then we could have saved them,” he added.

The babies all weighed between 700 and 1,200 grams (24-44 ounces). Two boys and two girls survived. Their mother had used fertility drugs.

“The problem is, how can I take care of them? How to feed them?” said their mother, Ibtisam Najim Abid, at the hospital.

Having the equipment is only half of the solution. This country needs medical personnel that is also trained to look after babies in this situation.

Should Obese Children Be Taken Away From Their Parents?

The Local Government Association in Britain has warned that the worst cases of obesity will be increasingly seen as evidence of “parental neglect,” and that social workers will have to step in to offer advice to protect the child’s welfare.

They believe that in the most extreme cases, children could be taken away from parents.

This message came after it was revealed that:

  • Councils are fitting super-size cremation furnaces to cope with fat corpses
  • Ambulances have fitted extra-wide stretchers and winches for obese patients
  • Schools are buying bigger seats for classrooms

About 1 in 4 people in England is obese and considered so overweight that it threatens the person’s health.

LGA public health spokesman David Rogers said some councils are already taking actions “where parents are putting children’s health in real danger.

“Councils would step in to deal with an under-nourished and neglected child so should a case with a morbidly obese child be different?” he continued. “There needs to be a national debate about the extent to which it is acceptable for local authorities to take action in cases where the welfare of children is in real jeopardy.”

Last year we met 8 year-old Connor McCreaddie who weighs 218lbs. Because his weight was 3 times the weight of most children his age he was removed from his parents home so that health officials could get his health back on track.

At that time, a doctor close to the situation believed that Colin was at risk of dying before he was 30.

Egyptian Mom Welcomes Septuplets

An Egyptian woman has given birth to septuplets at a hospital in the Egyptian coastal city of Alexandria.

Emad Darwish, head of el-Shatbi hospital says the 27-year-old Ghazala Khamis is now in a stable condition, although she did require a blood transfusion during the Caesarean section because of bleeding.

The babies, four boys and three girls, who arrived at 34 weeks gestation, have been placed in incubators in four different hospitals since they were premature.

“This is a very rare pregnancy, something I have never witnessed over my past 33 years in this profession,” Darwish said.

He added that he decided to carry out the C- section at the end of the eighth month of pregnancy, due to the pressure of the womb on the mother’s kidneys.

The babies’ weights range from an amazing 3.2lbs to 6.17lbs. There must be a record here…Normally septuplets arrive weighing under 2lbs each because there are so many of them sharing such a small space/food supply.

I wouldn’t be surprised if they were all breathing on their own already…

Ghazala, who already has three girls, has been on bedrest for 2 months now. The babies are being called miracles because they were not conceived with the help of any fertility medication.

8 Year-old Boy Creates Gift Baskets For Premature Babies

8 years ago John Sun was born prematurely at 27 weeks.

Now he is reaching out to other premature babies, or “preemies.”

This summer the fourth-grader began collecting aluminum cans to raise money to create gift baskets for preemies at local hospitals.

Each gift basket contain hand-knitted hats, stuffed animals from Boyds Bears, baby blankets and quilts.

Initially, John was inspired by his neighbors, Gabe O’Neill and his daughter Mary Margaret, who have a website, “KidsareHeroes.com,” dedicated to showcasing local children who make a difference in their community.

John decided that he, too, would like to help others, namely preemies and their families who are going through the same difficulties as his family did eight years ago.

After John was born, he had to remain at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital for 51 days. His parents, Paul and Terri, were only allowed to make brief visits daily.

During one of their visits, John’s parents found a yellow hat in his crib, left anonymously. Another day, they found a stuffed lamb.

After telling their son the story, he decided that he wanted to do that for someone else. Although premature birth is common, Terri believes it is often overlooked.

“People don’t talk about preemies,” she said.

When he started planning his project, John planned to make 50 baskets. However, with the response he’s gotten from the community willing to help, he may be able to make 75.

So far, John has collected about 70 pounds of aluminum cans. He has also found several people who are knitting hats and making blankets for the baskets.

Over the next year, John plans to deliver 10 baskets a month to the hospitals.

During this project, the family has learned that anyone of any age can make a difference.

“It’s not hard to do when you just try,” John said. “Anything is pretty much possible; give it a try.”‘
