US Government Questions Safety of Plastic in Baby Bottles

Just weeks after the Food and Drug Administration declared Biosphenol A safe in baby bottles, the US Government toxicologists have reiterated safety concerns about a chemical.

A report issued Wednesday said there is “some concern” that bisphenol A can cause developmental problems in the brain and hormonal systems of infants and children.

The conclusion from the National Toxicology Program repeats initial findings issued in April. The group — which includes scientists from the National Institutes of Health and other agencies — said bisphenol’s risks to humans cannot be ruled out, but acknowledged its concerns are based on the findings of studies on animals.

The American Chemistry Council, which represents plastics manufacturers, stressed that studies from animals provide “limited and inconclusive evidence.” The group has spent the last year defending the safety of bisphenol from new concerns about the risks of plastics to children.

Bisphenol is a plastic-hardening chemical used to seal canned food and make baby bottles. After more than a year of complaints from consumer and parent groups, the FDA has agreed to revisit the chemical’s safety. The agency last month said the trace amounts that leach out of food containers are not a threat to children or adults.

But the toxicology group said that may not be true.

“More research is clearly needed to understand exactly how these findings relate to human health and development,” said Michael Shelby, who directed the group’s report. “But at this point we can’t dismiss the possibility that the effects we’re seeing in animals may occur in humans.”

I didn’t cover the FDA report when it came out because I didn’t believe it. There is a reason why Canada is moving to ban bottles with BPA in them and there is a reason why California has banned toys and kids products with the same chemical in them.

David Spade Is A Daddy!

Congratulations to David Spade on the safe arrival of his first baby.

He is the father of a baby girl born last week in Missouri to Playboy Playmate Jillian Grace.

Even though the couple are no longer together, they have been in close contact throughout her pregnancy and he plans to go see the baby during his first break from shooting Rules of Engagement.

I am guessing that the official announcement was delayed until DNA tests were done one the baby.

“I had a brief relationship with Jillian Grace,” the Rules of Engagement star told TMZ in January. “If it is true that I am the father of her child, then I will accept responsibility.”

RECALL: Optave Action Baby Carriers Due to Fall Hazard

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Optave, today announced the voluntary recall of about 250 Action Baby Carriers because the baby carrier’s chest strap can detach from the shoulder straps, posing a fall hazard to the baby.

The company has received two reports of the chest strap detaching from the shoulder straps on the baby carrier. No injuries have been reported.

The recalled carriers were sold under the “Action Baby Carrier” brand name. The carriers are sold in various colors and patterns: blue, brown, green, “so square”, “the larrisa” and “spring breeze.”

Consumers should immediately stop using the carrier in the positions that require the use of the chest strap and contact Optave toll-free at (866) 208-0269 (9am - 5pm M - F) or visit the firm’s Web site at www.actionbabycarriers.com

Does Having A Baby Makes Romance Better?

New mommy Gwen Stefani recently told UK’s Hello! magazine she thinks that having babies have brought her and husband Gavin closer together.

“(It’s great to) see how we’ve both become more romantic and caring for each other simply because we’ve seen how beautiful it is to have come this far together and started a new chapter in our lives… I feel we’re closer in many ways now that we’re building something together outside our own crazy relationship.”

“I feel happier now. I know every mother must feel this way, but watching your child grow up and learn new things every day is one of the greatest and purest pleasures you can have.”

I have to agree with Gwen that having babies does bring a couple closer together - that is until your both up at 3am, 5am and 8am…
