On September 6th a Crystal Lake couple defied 1-in-200 million odds and gave birth to identical triplets.
The girls, who were conceived naturally, were less than 3 pounds when they were born, Sherman Hospital spokesman Josh McColough said. Since then, the triplets have been taken off of ventilators and feeding tubes and are progressing well. One of the girls, named Hannah, will go home along with her mother Thursday, McColough said. The others will remain at Sherman Hospital for the near future.
Experts say identical triplets are extremely rare. They are born when the mother’s original fertilized egg splits, and a resulting cell splits again.
