A 2-year-old California toddler is in hospital and lucky to be alive after fire broke out at his apartment while he was home alone.
Firefighters found the boy unconscious in the apartment he shared with his mother, in North Long Beach. He was revived on route to the Hospital, but was critically injured and is in stable condition.
At this time, it is believed that the fire was the result of an electrical issue. The fire smoldered, over a period of hours. Neighbours heard the apartment’s smoke detectors but, “They just kind of shunned it off,” said Captain Rich Brandt of the Long Beach Fire Department.
Over the course of the evening, the fire continued to fester and was finally reported at approximately 1:30 a.m. At the climax, the flames were involved enough to result in the collapse of a portion of the second floor.
When rescuers arrived the boy’s mother Patience Aruomah was nowhere to be found. She has been charged with felony child abuse after police determined that she was out of the apartment at the time of the fire and that she had left her toddler completely unattended for hours.
She is very fortunate not to have lost her son. Bail has been set at $100,000. – Jen R, Staff Writer
