Akiko Pruss with her new baby

This is the baby delivered by British midwife Carol Weeks at an evacuation centre in Cairns, Queensland, as Cyclone Yasi unleashed its devastating force outside. The baby girl was delivered safe and well at the Redlynch State College evacuation centre in a First Aid room, surrounded by 1,000 desperate families. Carol and her husband, Andrew, had been holidaying in Queensland to celebrate their 25th wedding anniversary. They were sheltering at the centre when a call went out for help. Japanese-born Akiko Pruss went into labor at 1.45am on February 3rd, 2011, and gave birth three hours later. Carol had to make do with whatever medicines were in the First Aid room as she helped the baby be delivered safely. Akiko was accompanied by her mother and husband, Christian. She and Christian already have one child and they live in Cairns. Akiko has said the girl will definitely not be named Yasi. Carol has been hailed a hero for making sure mother and baby were safe and well.
