A mom in India has set a world record by giving birth to twins at the reported age of 73.
The girls were delivered via caesarian section and are expected to stay in the hospital for observation for the next few
“The surgery went well… the mother and the babies are all healthy with no complications,” Dr. Sanakayyala Umashankar, the director of Ahalya IVF, who performed the C-section.
Mangayamma and her husband Raja Rao, 80, married in 1962. After years of trying to have a baby naturally, they went to Umashankar last year to learn more about IVF treatment.
A 55-year-old woman in their community successfully had children through IVF so they were hopeful it could work for them as well.
When preliminary tests came back positive they opted for the treatment.
Because Erramatti had no preexisting conditions, the fertility specialist said he had no issues with the procedure.
“We are not allowing the mother to breastfeed and the babies will be fed through the milk bank,” the doctor said.
“She is very confident now,” Umashankar said. “More confident than ever in her life and she is looking forward to the next chapter of her life with the kids.”
The new mom is not expected to have any post-natal complications.
While it sounds incredible, it may not be ideal for the kids whose parents are in the last years of life.
