Personnel from the System for the Comprehensive Development of the Family (DIF) are currently caring for two young girls, both under the age of three after their mother abandoned them on a street corner in Cancun. This heart-wrenching event took place on Wednesday when the mother was seen fleeing the area after leaving her children behind.

Witnesses immediately alerted the police, leading to a quick response from the state’s Specialized Group for Attention to Domestic and Gender Violence (GEAVIG). The authorities quickly located and rescued the abandoned children.
The mother was apprehended a few blocks away. Identified as Canadian, she reportedly left her children because she lacked the financial means to care for them. Marisol Sendo Rodríguez, Director of the DIF in Cancun, confirmed that the children are now safe and under protective care following their rescue on June 26.
“The girls are fine. They were sheltered with us in the Temporary Assistance House, they are fine. Investigations are being carried out and, at first glance, the girls do not show any signs of abuse, but all the corresponding procedures are being carried out,” she reported.
The DIF is actively searching for family members who might be able to take in the children. “If they have a support network, then obviously all the investigations are carried out and if it is viable, they can keep the children,” stated Sendo Rodríguez. Local authorities are currently reviewing the legal situation, ensuring that the children remain in protective custody until the investigation, which includes psychological evaluations of the mother, is complete.
The two girls are being cared for by DIF, alongside 108 other children. It remains unclear whether the Canadian woman and her daughters were visiting Cancun or residing there.
