Parents using a Safety 1st Grow & Go Sprint car seat should take immediate action following a recall from Dorel Juvenile Group. Nearly 180,000 units are affected due to a choking hazard linked to the headrest foam.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the headrest foam pad in certain Safety 1st Grow & Go Sprint car seats may not be securely attached. This can allow a child to remove pieces of foam and potentially place them in their mouth—posing a serious choking risk. To date, Dorel has received 13 reports of children doing just that.
All fashions for all dates of manufacture of the Safety 1st Grow & Go Sprint seats with model number CC321 are included in this recall. These models use a unique headrest foam design, assembly process, and soft goods execution. They were manufactured between February and December 2023.
Full model numbers included in the recall are:
- CC321GYU
- CC321GYUD
- CC321GYY
- CC321GYYD
- CC321HAO
- CC321HAR
?? Important Note: Dorel manufactures other Safety 1st child seats under the “Grow and Go” and “Grow and Go Sprint” names that do not use the CC321 design. These models have different foam constructions and are not included in this recall.
What Parents Should Do Next
If you own one of the affected seats, follow these steps:
- Check the model number and date
Look for a white label on the car seat—usually found on the back or base—to confirm whether your model is part of the recall. If the model begins with CC321 and was made between February and December 2023, it is affected. - Stop using the foam headrest if it is loose
Until your replacement part arrives, remove or closely monitor the headrest if any foam appears loose or damaged. Do not attempt to tape or glue it back in place. - Request your free replacement kit
Dorel will provide a free headrest pad assembly kit to all affected consumers. Notification letters will begin mailing on June 9, 2025, but parents can act sooner by contacting Dorel directly: - Report any incidents
If your child has placed a piece of foam in their mouth or experienced related issues, report it to the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 or visit nhtsa.gov.
Dorel has stated that you may continue to use your recalled car seat as long as the foam is intact and not accessible to the child. If you’re concerned or have questions, their customer service is available Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. EST at 1-877-657-9546 or by email at gng-sprint-recall@djgusa.com.
Parents should register their affected seat online to receive the free recall kit. Once registered, Dorel will begin mailing the kits starting in mid-June 2025. The kit includes a new headrest pad and installation instructions. Once installed, the replacement pad will securely cover the foam, preventing a child from accessing it. If you own another Safety 1st “Grow and Go” or “Grow and Go Sprint” seat with a different model number, it is not included in the recall, as it uses a different foam design and construction.
