Eating Fruit and Veg ‘Halves Miscarriage Risk’

A groundbreaking study has revealed that maintaining a healthy diet during pregnancy can significantly reduce the risk of miscarrying. In fact, women who regularly consume fruits and vegetables are 46% less likely to experience a miscarriage.

But the benefits don’t stop there. This comprehensive study, which examined thousands of pregnant women, also found that chocolate, vitamin tablets, dairy products, fish, and white meat can increase the chances of a successful pregnancy.

On the other hand, underweight women face a 70% higher risk of miscarrying. Interestingly, there was also a slight increase in miscarriage rates among women whose partners were over the age of 45, suggesting that men, too, have a biological clock.

These findings are a game-changer for women who have experienced the devastating loss of a pregnancy. While more research is needed, the Miscarriage Association, which funded this study, believes that these insights can help women reduce their risk of miscarriage and increase their chances of having a healthy baby.

So, what should pregnant women do? While the study did not specify the exact amount of fruits and vegetables that should be included in the diet, it is generally recommended to aim for five servings per day. Additionally, taking vitamin tablets was found to greatly reduce the risk of miscarriage.

The study also uncovered the benefits of regular dairy consumption, such as milk, yogurt, and cheese, which can decrease the risk by 25%. Including white meat or fish in meals twice a week can further reduce the risk by around 15%. And for those with a sweet tooth, indulging in chocolate regularly can lower the risk by 15%.

Overall, this study highlights the importance of a well-rounded, nutritious diet during pregnancy. By fueling your body with the right nutrients, you can increase your chances of a healthy pregnancy and protect against the heartbreaking experience of miscarriage.
