Abandoned Newborn Baby Found Outside Texas Church During Heatwave

In a heartbreaking incident during a scorching heat wave, a one-day-old baby boy was discovered abandoned outside a Texas church for an extensive period as temperatures soared to dangerous levels, well beyond triple digits.

According to San Antonio police, surveillance footage captured a man and a woman carrying a basket into the parking lot of Grissom Road Church around 1 a.m. on July 17. The pair placed the basket near the back door of the church and left on foot. However, it wasn’t until approximately 8:50 p.m. when a bicyclist noticed something suspicious under the awning and alerted the authorities.

When the bicyclist investigated further, he found a baby’s leg protruding from the basket, covered by a black jacket. As he removed the jacket, he discovered the newborn inside. Astonishingly, despite the day’s scorching temperature of 110 degrees, the baby remained unharmed and still had the umbilical cord attached.

Alongside the abandoned infant, investigators found a note at the scene. Texas Child Protective Services were subsequently informed and involved in the case.

In response to cases like this, Governor Greg Abbott recently signed a bill expanding the state’s “Baby Moses” law. The new legislation will soon allow the use of “baby boxes” as a safe and accessible method for families in crisis to surrender their newborns to emergency infant care providers.

These changes will go into effect on September 1st, aiming to prevent further incidents of abandonment and ensure the well-being of vulnerable infants in Texas.
