Babies, it seems, have a knack of arriving at the least convenient time. Over the holidays a couple have been born in cars at the side of the road, one made his grand entrance on a subway train, and one tried to make an inflight appearance – but the plane’s pilot was able to divert the flight to avoid the baby’s surprise arrival!
A mom-to-be was flying on Delta Air Lines’ Flight 2566 from San Francisco to Minneapolis on Wednesday when she went into labor. As we have seen many times in the past, moms who go into labor at 30,000 feet normally deliver their babies on the airplane but, thankfully in this case, the pilot was able to divert the flight to Salt Lake City in hopes that the baby could be born in a hospital.
A pediatrician on board helped the passenger until the flight landed at about 9:45 a.m., where the local fire department was waiting to transfer her to the University of Utah Hospital, where she gave birth to a baby boy.
Both the mother and child are in good condition, the hospital told CNN affiliate KUTV.
This is the second time in the last 3 weeks that a woman has gone into labor in the air. A plane headed to Phoenix from San Francisco needed to make an emergency landing in Los Angeles on December 9th after a passenger on board delivered her baby shortly after take off.
