A family in Cambridge, Ontario is celebrating the arrival of their fifth child, and it’s a record-breaking one. Sonny Ayres was born at the Cambridge Memorial Hospital on Monday via caesarean section, weighing a whopping 14 pounds, eight ounces. This makes him the largest baby born at the hospital in over a decade.
The news of Sonny’s size quickly spread throughout the hospital, with doctors and nurses amazed by his chubby and chunky appearance. Dr. Asa Ahimbisibwe, Ayres’ obstetrician-gynecologist, revealed that the Ayres family is known for producing big children, with their previous baby weighing 13 pounds, 14 ounces.
Even Dr. Ahimbisibwe, who has over 15 years of experience delivering babies, admitted that Sonny is the biggest infant he has ever seen. The ultrasound from last week had predicted that Sonny would be over 13lbs.
Sonny’s parents, Britteney and Chance Ayres, were both shocked by his size. Britteney fondly recalls, “It was hard to get around. But I didn’t think he would be 14 pounds. Maybe 13 at the very least.” Chance adds that Sonny is “big around” and more stout compared to their other children.
With Sonny’s birth, the Ayres family is complete. They now have five children, including three boys and one girl. The youngest siblings, Chance, Everett, Lucky, and Marigold, are thrilled to welcome their new baby brother.
Cambridge Memorial Hospital’s records only go back to 2010, and Sonny is the largest baby born since then. The average birth weight at the hospital is around 7.5 pounds, and less than five other births have exceeded 6,000 grams.
The Ayres family is overjoyed to have this beautiful addition to their family, and they feel that their growing brood is a labor of love. Chance Ayres emphasizes that Sonny will be their last child, declaring, “No, this is the end. Five is enough.”
