Determined to create a unique space for his daughter, one dad spend 18 months building one of the most magical trees and a reading nooks I have ever seen. Like something out of a movie, he left no detail out, which makes the finished product jaw dropping.
An artist in the video game industry, this dad started with a sketch, and then put together a 1:12 scale model, which was on a grid that corresponded with a grid he drew on the walls and floors of his daughter’s room.
Working on weekends and evenings, he used 3/8″ rebar and 1/8″ steel rod from scraps, or Home Depot to make the tree’s frame. Not taking any chances he over-engineered it a bit so that it could easily support 3 adults, when in reality, it would only ever be used by little kids.
After the structure was completed, he covered the tree in expanded metal lathe and added some pre-wired the lights for the fairy windows.
The trunk and the lower branches were created with a cement mixture, while the branches that extend across the roof were done with paper mache.
Having used silicone bark rollers and clay sculpting tools to create texture during the concrete phase, his challenge now was to paint the tree to look a real as possible.
Hardwood floors were added to the room, but a spot in front of the tree was left for comfy carpet.
The fairy windows were cut out of wood and finished with watercolor paper to allow the light to go through and foliage was added to the tree to give it a more whimsical look.
This dad also added a bird nest, butterflies, glass bulbs and 6 series of 50 standard Christmas bulbs to the branches to bring the tree to life.
The carpet that was added to the base of the tree also runs inside the tree and up the wall to create the effect of a mossy hole in the tree. The mirror that was added to the wall gives it a Disney-esk feeling. Snow White?
Best of all? It’s climbable! There is a seat half way up that can be used as a relaxation spot for watching movies or just hanging out with friends.
To say this dad is a rock star may be an understatement. This tree is definitely one of the coolest elements we have ever seen in a bedroom!
