Scientists have recently discovered that the presence of certain fats in our food could significantly decrease a woman’s chances of conceiving. In fact, the risk of fertility problems can increase by a staggering 70% or more. Shockingly, even consuming just one donut or a serving of chips each day can have a detrimental effect on fertility.
The experts behind this groundbreaking study, conducted at the prestigious Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, strongly advise women who are trying to conceive to avoid these harmful fats, known as trans fats. The study examined a group of 18,500 women attempting to conceive and found that 438 of them faced ovulatory problems.
When a woman fails to ovulate, there is no egg for sperm to fertilize, making it impossible for her to become pregnant. The researchers discovered that women who obtained 2% of their energy intake from trans fats, rather than carbohydrates or healthier fats like sunflower oil, were 70% more likely to experience infertility due to lack of ovulation. Furthermore, those who obtained their energy from trans fats instead of monounsaturated fats like olive oil were twice as likely to face fertility problems.
To reach the 2% threshold, individuals only need to consume four grams of trans fats daily on a 2,000-calorie diet. Shockingly, that amount can easily be consumed in a single meal of pie and chips or even just one donut.
Dr. Jorge Chavarro, the lead researcher, emphasizes that even though the amount of fats required to have an impact on fertility is relatively small, the effect is substantial. He suggests that women who wish to conceive should monitor their trans fat consumption, quit smoking, and maintain a healthy weight. This is particularly crucial for individuals with known ovulation problems like Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome.
Although the exact mechanism by which these fats affect ovulation remains unclear, there is a possibility that they influence insulin sensitivity, a well-known factor in fertility issues.
By being conscious of their trans fat intake and making positive lifestyle choices, women can improve their chances of successfully conceiving a baby.
