A missing toddler has been safely reunited with his family, all thanks to the remarkable efforts of law enforcement and their dedicated K-9 companion.
The Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office shared the uplifting news that their K-9 hero, Kuno, played a pivotal role in locating the three-year-old, who had gone missing on Monday, March 4th, after managing to pry open a window and wander away from his Geneva Township home, wearing only in a diaper.
Upon receiving the distress call, officers initiated a search effort that included the deployment of the K-9 unit. With Kuno and his handler, Deputy Eric Calhoun, leading the charge, they discovered a footprint near the home, which eventually led them to a body of water nearly a quarter-mile away.
The South Haven Area Emergency Services’ drone operators played a crucial role in spotting the child near a pond, amplifying hopes for a swift resolution. Ultimately, Kuno and Deputy Calhoun located the child in good health, just 50 yards away from the water’s edge, with only minor scratches.
Kuno’s exceptional skills and unwavering dedication have made him an invaluable member of the Van Buren County Sheriff’s Office since 2017, having aided in the safe recovery of five missing children during his tenure.
Deputy Calhoun shared the profound bond he shares with Kuno, likening it to that of family. From navigating dangerous situations like narcotics busts to providing steadfast support during SWAT team operations, Kuno’s loyalty knows no bounds, both on and off duty. The bond they share, he said, is akin to having another child, as Kuno seamlessly integrates into his family life, providing companionship and support around the clock.
