A popular children’s jewelry-making kit is being pulled from store shelves after it was found to contain hazardous materials. LaRose Industries LLC, the maker of Cra-Z-Art Gemex/Gel2Gem jewelry kits, has issued a recall for more than 224,000 units due to safety concerns.
The recall stems from the presence of a resin in the kits that, in its liquid state, can cause skin, eye, and respiratory irritation or sensitization if inhaled, touched, or ingested. The resin contains hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEMA), an acrylate in amounts that exceed the limits permitted in children’s products under the Federal Hazardous Substances Act.
Parents and caregivers are advised to inspect any jewelry made with these kits to ensure it is fully cured. If liquid resin or any residue is found, the jewelry should not be worn and must be kept away from children. Once cured, the resin no longer poses a hazard.
The recall includes 10 different models of Cra-Z-Art Gemex/Gel2Gem jewelry kits and one refill pack.

These products were sold at Target, Marshall’s, T.J. Maxx, Joann stores, and various online retailers, including Amazon.com, Target.com, Walmart.com, and Joann.com, from January 2023 to September 2024, with prices ranging from $13 to $36. Manufactured in China and imported by LaRose Industries LLC, dba Cra-Z-Art, of Randolph, New Jersey, the kits have not been linked to any reported injuries so far.
Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled jewelry kits and contact LaRose Industries for a full refund. The company is reaching out directly to known purchasers.
