Mom Question – Can I Colour My Hair While I’m Pregnant?

I received this question by e-mail over the weekend and thought I would post the response in case other mothers had the same question.

I am currently 3 months pregnant and have read many conflicting reports about coloring your hair during pregnancy. Have you come across any research that confirms that the chemicals in hair dye are bad for your unborn child?

Dear Sam,

From what you eat and drink to what medications you should take and even what activities you can participate in, there’s a lot of information out there about being pregnant and taking care of yourself. So, is it safe to color your hair while pregnant?

There have been several studies done on the effects of hair dye on pregnant women both before and during pregnancy. One such study found that there was no evidence linking hair dye use during pregnancy with an increased risk of birth defects or other problems in babies. However, another study did show an association between using permanent hair dyes prior to conception (in the three months prior) and an increased risk of certain birth defects like spina bifida.

It is important to note that studies have not yet confirmed any direct link between the chemicals in hair dye and birth defects or other health problems for babies born to mothers who used hair dyes while pregnant. However, it is still recommended that due to the potential risks associated with this practice, women should avoid coloring their hair during pregnancy if possible.

If you want to change up your look without using traditional dyes, there are some alternatives available. For example, highlights and lowlights are great options because they do not require full coverage of all your strands as dyes do; they only color part of each strand which reduces contact with potentially hazardous chemicals. You can also try semi-permanent dyes which wash out after a few weeks or use temporary color sprays or rinses which will last until your next shampoo. Finally, if you must use permanent color products make sure that they are free from ammonia or peroxide for added safety precautions.

At the end of the day, whether or not you choose to colour your hair while pregnant is ultimately up to you but it’s important that you understand the potential risks associated with this practice first before making a decision. If possible, try going with one of the alternative options listed above as they may be safer for both mom and baby during pregnancy than using traditional chemical-based dyes. Ultimately though, always talk with your doctor before making any decisions about how best to take care of yourself while pregnant so that both mom and baby stay safe throughout this special journey
