A shocking incident in Pacoima, California has left the community outraged and questioning the actions of a grown man who thought it was acceptable to slap a child with autism simply for touching his car.
On July 1, 2024, Alfredo Morales, a 10-year-old boy with autism, was crossing the street with his older sister at Laurel Canyon Boulevard and Osbourne Street. Alfredo reached out and touched the emblem on a man’s Mercedes-Benz sedan. This seemingly innocent action provoked an immediate and violent response.
The man made a U-turn, followed the siblings to a nearby bus stop, and then approached Alfredo, who was sitting on a bench. Despite Alfredo’s sister’s attempts to apologize and intervene, the man slapped the boy in the face.
The disturbing incident was captured on cell phone video, showing the man striking Alfredo, who was defenseless and unsuspecting. Alfredo’s family is currently homeless and living out of their truck, adding another layer of hardship to their already challenging circumstances.
Miguel Morales, Alfredo’s father, expressed his anger and desire for justice. Alfredo’s autism makes him prone to exploring his environment by touching objects, a harmless behavior that does not warrant violence.
A witness named Ashley, who filmed the assault, was visibly shaken. “I was traumatized, I was shaking,” she said, recalling her horror as she tried to stop the man.
The video of the incident went viral on social media, sparking outrage and leading concerned community members to demand answers from the suspect, who was identified but not available for comment.
Community member Laura Diaz emphasized the collective sentiment: “We’re here to support and to let the community know that this shouldn’t happen, especially with the boy being autistic.”
Law enforcement was seen at the suspect’s home following reports of stalking and death threats against his family. The Morales family has filed a police report, and the community continues to rally around them, seeking justice for Alfredo.
This incident raises important questions about empathy, understanding, and the appropriate way to handle interactions with children, especially those with special needs. How can an adult think it’s acceptable to react with violence toward a child for such a minor action?
A gofundme page has been set up to help the family get back on their feet.
