Mary Cheney is expecting her first child next month and the sex of the baby has be revealed by her dad, Vice President Dick Cheney on ABC’s Newsradio.
“I’m delighted I’m about to be a grandparent for the sixth time,” the Vice President, 66, said “I’m looking forward to the arrival of a new grandson.”
In December, Mary announced that she was expecting a baby with her partner of 15 years Heather Poe.
Later that month, President Bush, who opposes gay marriage, told PEOPLE: “I think Mary is going to be a loving soul to her child. And I’m happy for her.”
News of the pregnancy reignited the debate about gay marriage. During the presidential campaign, Mary Cheney was criticized by gay activists for not being more publicly supportive of same-sex marriage. Her father said people “ought to be free to enter into any kind of relationship they want to” but deferred to the president’s policy supporting a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages.
I just want this baby to have a healthy, happy home.
The fact that he has two moms is really not an issues, that he has 2 parents is. This is a couple who has been together for 15 years. I think it’s safe to say the commitment is there, whether they are married or not.
