Mountain Equipment Company (MEC) has issued an urgent recall for its MEC Toaster and Toaster Bunting Suits after discovering that a small number of these insulated, waterproof suits contained mould. This recall affects specific item and purchase order numbers, with approximately 3,200 units sold in Canada between August 2024 and December 2024.
The affected suits include:
- MEC Toaster Suit (Item #5047-839, PO #666503) in sizes Child 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7. Available in Salmonberry, Purple Orchid, Summit, Black POW, and Dark Forest Mountain Snow.
- MEC Toaster Bunting Suit (Item #5037-265, PO #666483) in sizes 6, 12, 18, and 24 months. Available in Summit Winter Critters, Salmonberry, Wild Berry, and Earthen Gold.
The purchase order number can be found in the bundle of tags inside the garment: on the inside left hip for the Toaster Bunting Suit and on the central back inside seam for the Toaster Suit.
Potential Health Risks
The presence of mould in these garments can pose health risks, particularly for individuals with compromised immune systems, respiratory conditions, or mould allergies. While the majority of the suits may not be affected, MEC is taking proactive measures to ensure consumer safety.
As of February 11, 2025, two reports of injuries related to this issue have been received in Canada.
