Mozart Please!

Newborns at Kosice-Saca Hospital in Slovakia are being introduced to Mozart from the moment they are born. This is not to create future musical prodigies, but rather to promote the mental and physical development of the babies through the benefits of music therapy.

According to Slavka Viragova, the chief consultant at the hospital, childbirth is a stressful experience for babies, and they are accustomed to the comforting sound of their mother’s heartbeat in the womb. To help them feel a sense of security and calm even when they are away from their mothers, the babies are exposed to music.

In a room decorated with enchanting animal drawings, newborns in swaddling clothes are placed in beds next to each other and are given the opportunity to listen to soothing music while they sleep. The babies occasionally open their eyes, move, yawn, and even smile.

In another room, premature babies or those with health conditions are also provided with music therapy in specially designed “incubators”. It has been observed that carefully chosen music therapy helps to relieve congestion in their organs, stabilize their breathing, and promote weight gain. Overall, music therapy helps the babies recover from the stress of birth and better cope with pain.

The use of music therapy at the Kosice-Saca Hospital is aimed at nurturing the well-being of these newborns and enhancing their early development.

  • This is awesome!! When the girl’s came home from the hospital I would play the baby eistein videos all day long so they could hear the music. I read so much about how stimulating music was for babies brain development. Classical music is suppose to be the best for them. I think all hospitals world wide should do this. Especially for the preemies.
