Early Sunday morning, June 9th, 2024, a newborn girl, still with her umbilical cord attached, was found wrapped in a blanket in Houston, Texas. The discovery happened around 9:05 a.m. when a passerby noticed the infant on Bear Creek Trail and immediately contacted authorities.
Deputies from the Harris County Sheriff’s Office District 4 quickly arrived at the scene on Casa Martin Drive. They found the baby girl awake and breathing, with indications that she had been born only a few hours earlier. Thanks to the swift actions of Cy-Fair EMS, the infant was transported to Methodist Hospital in Katy, where she was confirmed to be in good condition.
A vehicle caught on video near the scene is under investigation, as it may belong to those who discovered the baby. The Sheriff’s Office is actively seeking information about the circumstances surrounding the baby’s abandonment and is working to identify her parents.
Sheriff’s Office spokesperson shared that while the baby girl was premature, she is thankfully in good health. They also praised the quick-thinking good Samaritans whose actions likely saved her life. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward to aid in the ongoing investigation.
A Safe Haven: The Baby Moses Law
For parents facing desperate situations, Texas provides a compassionate option through the “Baby Moses Law.” This law allows parents to safely and confidentially relinquish their newborns—up to 60 days old—at designated Emergency Infant Care providers without fear of legal consequences, as long as the baby has not been harmed.
Designated Safe Havens Include:
- Hospitals
- Fire Stations
- Free-standing Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Stations
- Any facility with 24-hour emergency care services
When using the Baby Moses Law, parents must hand the baby to an employee at these locations and inform them of their intent. If no personnel are immediately available, please ensure you locate one, as the law requires direct handover to a person.
