Same Mother, Same Birthday, Different Nationalities: Twins Delivered in Two Different Countries

Four weeks before her delivery date, Donna Keenan went to watch the Euro 2012 final with her partner, Joe Fox, at his parent’s house in Wooler, England. But a different kind of event would overshadow the game after Donna’s water suddenly broke.

“I had already been up to the Borders hospital and was back at Joe’s mum’s house when I started to feel a bit strange, and that’s when my waters went,” Donna said. “That was just after 8pm. I called the hospital and they said to come straight in, but we didn’t have the time. We called the paramedics and the next thing I remember is them saying to get ready to have the baby on the living room floor…Joe and I already have a daughter, Jessica, who’s now two-and-a-half, and I was in labor with her for 30 hours, so I never imagined the twins would come so quickly.”

And so, at 10 pm, right there on the living room floor, little Dylan Joseph Fox was born, weighing in at 5lbs, 13oz. But the paramedics were concerned because of how premature the infants were, so they decided that they might have enough time to get to the hospital. That hospital, Borders General Hospital, just happened to be in Scotland.

Thinking of how the babies were already going to be born in different country, Donna’s partner held onto a small hope that the second baby would be born after midnight.

“I joked to Donna that she should hold on as long as possible, but I only mentioned it once and I don’t think it went down too well,” Joe said.

But Hannah wouldn’t hold out. At the Borders hospital at 11:40pm, Hannah was born, weighing in at 4lbs, 14.5oz.

Mom and both babies are now doing well in the special care baby unit of Borders hospital. It’s hoped that all three will eventually be transferred closer to Northumberland, near where Dylan was born, before heading home as a family. But for now, the proud parents are still just trying to wrap their heads around the fact that their children have different nationalities.

“We’re still getting our heads around it,” Joe admitted. “I’ve been looking online for an England babygro for Dylan and a Scotland one for Hannah. It was an amazing experience, to say the least, and Donna was brilliant.”
