In a rare medical event in the United Arab Emirates, a woman has given birth to quintuplets at Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City in Abu Dhabi. Despite the high risks typically associated with such cases, both the mother and all five newborns are reported to be in good health.
According to Emarat Al Youm, Dr. Abdul Qader Al-Musaibi, Medical Director of Sheikh Shakhbout Medical City, managed by the Pure Health Group, emphasized the rarity of this occurrence. “Such cases happen only once in every 45 to 60 million pregnancies,” he explained. The successful outcome highlights the expertise of the medical team handling the delivery.
Dr. Mohiuddin Saud, another member of the medical team, shed light on the unique aspects of the case. He noted that the babies were born prematurely, at 25 weeks gestation, but the delivery proceeded without significant complications. “While multiple births often carry high risks for the mother, this case unfolded differently, and the team was relieved at the smooth process,” Dr. Saud added.
Immediately after delivery, the quintuplets were placed in incubators to ensure proper care due to their premature status. The infants weighed between 588 and 801 grams, reflecting their delicate start to life. Oddly, the article notes that after receiving specialized medical attention and stabilizing their health, the newborns were discharged and reunited with their parents. This is rare for babies born so prematurely. Babies born weighing 558gms need around-the-clock NICU care until they are term and are able to regulate their temperature and take feeds by mouth independently.
