In an unexpected turn of events, a pregnant woman went into labor on a train journey from Rome to Turin. Thanks to the quick thinking of the train conductor and the innovative use of a video call, the birth went smoothly and was met with applause from fellow passengers.
Just after passing Genoa, the woman began experiencing strong contractions. Train conductor Loredana Ferreri immediately sprang into action, enlisting the help of Andrea Luschi, the head of services, to ensure a safe delivery for both mother and baby.
Meanwhile, Isabella Carnero, a health worker on the same train, called fellow midwife Daniela Sanfilippo for assistance. In a remarkable display of teamwork, Daniela guided Isabella via video call as they coordinated the delivery. The train made an unexpected stop in Arquata Scrivia, where the birth took place.
“I initially thought it was a joke,” admits Daniela, “but once I realized it was real, I understood that the video call solution suggested by Trenitalia staff was the best approach.” Each member played a crucial role – the head of services observed everything, the train conductor provided emotional support, the midwife coordinated the delivery, and the health worker assisted with the overall management.
The Trenitalia staff, along with fellow passengers, cooperated seamlessly to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for the mother. Even an 86-year-old traveler kindly offered clean and fragrant towels from her suitcase. The level of support and care was truly heartwarming.
For everyone involved, this was an extraordinary and unforgettable day. “It was the most adrenaline-filled and beautiful day of my professional career,” says headmistress Ferreri, who has been with Trenitalia since 1995. She is grateful to have been a part of this incredible experience.
The baby girl was born after just 40 minutes of labor and, together with her mother, was taken to San Giacomo Hospital in Novi Ligure by the Green Cross, who boarded the train after the delivery. The train arrived in Turin 30 minutes behind schedule, but no one minded. This delay was justified by the extraordinary reason behind it.
