When Tamar Levy received a routine ultrasound during her pregnancy, she had no idea that her unborn daughter would soon make medical history. At Jerusalem’s Hadassah University Medical Center, doctors discovered that Levy’s baby had cysts in both her ovaries, causing ovarian torsion. This condition, usually seen in teenagers or adults, could result in severe pain and the loss of both ovaries.
The medical team at Hadassah Ein Kerem took immediate action. They decided to deliver Tamar by emergency C-section and perform emergency surgery on the baby, despite the fact that this surgery had never been done before on a newborn anywhere in the world.
Thanks to the recent upgrade of ultrasound technology at Hadassah Ein Kerem, the doctors were able to accurately diagnose the condition and ensure blood flow to the ovaries. Dr. Dan Arbel skillfully carried out the procedure, with assistance from Dr. Noa Ofek Shlomai, just half an hour after the baby’s birth. The surgery was successful, removing the blockages and draining the cysts.
The incredible speed and precision of the medical team resulted in the preservation of the baby’s ovaries. Tamar Levy expressed her gratitude for the team’s quick response and the excellent care provided throughout the process.
“Everything happened so quickly in order to save my daughter’s ovaries,” said Levy. “Within a few minutes of the diagnosis, I went into an emergency caesarean section, and immediately after that the baby was operated on and, thank God, everything went well. I thank everyone who took care of me along the way and for the wonderful and quick work done by the staff at the hospital in order to take care of our daughter.”
This groundbreaking surgery sets a new precedent for newborns worldwide and highlights the remarkable capabilities of Hadassah University Medical Center.
