I still remember my first Barbie Camper like it was yesterday. I was only 4 or 5 years old and it was all I wanted for Christmas. Measuring a generous 3 feet long, my Barbie Star Traveller Motorhome was the cat’s pajamas and we had it until I was in my twenties. It came with 2 captain’s chairs, a full kitchen, bathroom, sundeck and dressing area for Barbie. I played with it every day and passed it along to my sister when she was old enough to play with Barbies.
Over the years the camping experience has evolved for Barbie. Long ago she traded in her 40-footer for a smaller, more modern version. The 2014 BARBIE® Sisters’ Deluxe Camper™ has a more compact footprint, but doesn’t compromise on all of the features that Barbie needs to have a good time!
Out of the box the camper comes fully assembled – except for one detail – the stickers! Included with the set is almost 40 stickers that need to be placed inside and outside the camper to bring it to life. They do take some time to apply, but really give the RV some personality.
When it’s time to play the camper comes in a couple of sections.
Altogether it’s an RV. Unlock the cab and you have a trailer and car, that extends out at the back to accommodate a tub – which is the pool.
The camper itself comes to life, however, when you unfold it to reveal a full-featured living space for Barbie(not included) and her three friends.
When it’s time to sleep two twin bunk beds drop down on top of the main double bed. The bathroom slides over to make room for the beds to expand and the back wall transforms into a breakfast bar. The kitchen comes complete with a fridge, oven, stove and above the counter cupboards. Mattel has also included 4 plates, 4 cups, a frying pan, a box of cereal, whip cream, eggs, juice and a tray of muffins. I loved that all of the tiny accessories have notches in them that allow them to be fixed to the counter, cupboard or fridge. This prevents them from rolling all over the place when the camper is in motion.
During our test our the BARBIE Sisters’ Deluxe Camper got a workout from little girls and little boys. The girls used it with any doll they could find and the boys played with it for hours with their stuffed animals and action figures. But it works because all the bones are there. Kitchen, dining room, bathroom, 3 beds and a pool! Even though I wasn’t adventurous enough to fill the pool up they were fine pretending that there was water in there. The boys also didn’t care that it was pink. They focused on what there was to do inside, which I loved.
Mattel has done a great job of creating a playset that can be used in many different ways. Perfect for kids 3 and up, it can be transformed for adventure, glamping or a bunk house for Batman and his friends!
