Virginia Fugitive Arrested in Florida After Allegedly Abandoning Newborn In The Snow

Darvin Flores Caballeros, 20, was taken into custody on Thursday in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, by deputies from the Walton County Sheriff’s Office. He was wanted in Fairfax County, Virginia, in connection with a domestic assault that left the infant’s mother seriously injured and the 13-day-old baby abandoned in freezing conditions.

According to police, the incident occurred on February 12, when officers from the Fairfax County Police Department responded to a domestic violence report. Investigators determined that Caballeros had physically assaulted and strangled the victim during an altercation. Amid the struggle, the infant was dropped, and Caballeros fled the scene on foot, taking the baby with him.

A Good Samaritan later discovered the abandoned infant lying in a pile of snow, prompting immediate emergency response. The child’s mother was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.

Authorities launched a multi-state search for Caballeros, who was believed to have fled Virginia. On February 20, Walton County deputies received information that he was in the Santa Rosa Beach area. Officers located him exiting an apartment complex and conducted a felony stop after confirming his identity. He was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Walton County Jail.

Caballeros is facing multiple charges, including malicious wounding, strangulation, two counts of child endangerment, assault and battery on a family member, petit larceny, and violation of an emergency protective order. While these charges fall under Virginia law, they equate to serious offenses in Florida, including aggravated battery, aggravated child abuse, and false imprisonment.

He remains in custody in Florida, awaiting extradition to Virginia to face prosecution.
